 Benicia Volunteer Fire Department

California's Oldest Continous Volunteer Fire Department
Serving the Community since 1847

The Benicia Volunteer Firemen, Inc. (A California Corporation) is a non-profit corporation that provides the general management of the Corporation. The Benicia Fire Museum also provides volunteer firefighters to the City of Benicia Fire Department. The Benicia Volunteer Firemen, Inc, is the oldest firefighting organization in the State of California, established in 1847 by the citizens of Benicia. The Corporation is NOT part of the Benicia Fire Department.

The Benicia Volunteer Firemen incorporated in 1950 with its primary mission to provide educational opportunities to members of the community about past, current and the future of firefighting through the Benicia Fire Museum. In addition, the Corporation supplements and supports the Benicia Fire Department with additional staffing of volunteer firefighters.

Benicia Bucket Brigade Formed 151 years ago
In May 1847 the citizens of Benicia realized that the newly formed City needed to provide for an organized force of me to fight fires within the City. Thus, eight men formed the Benicia Bucket Brigade. This group of men would be the beginning of what is known today as the Benicia Volunteer Fire Dept.
